There are a number of places in England with Isle or Island in their names but which would not usually be considered islands. These can be classified as places that:

  1. were islands once but have now become part of the mainland, notably Thanet
  2. are still islands but are only separated by narrow channels, eg. Portsea Island
  3. were islands of higher ground within fens, eg. Ely
  4. are peninsulas rather than true islands, eg. Purbeck
