was Angola split up by religions

[edit]

"split up" is certainly exaggerated. In some rural regions, Catholics and Protestants were separated by the missionaries, but those walls have mostly broken down. The leadership of UNITA was mostly composed of Ovimbundu who had been socialized in the Igreja Evangélica Congregacional de Angola, which created a social identity where ethnicity, religion, and party politics constituted a specific mixture. For some period of time, a similar mixture existed in the Northwest: Bakongo/Baptista/FNLA. The cleavages resulting from these social identities still exist in a certain measure, but are loosing importance. -- Aflis (talk) 23:30, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
