Why is the article entitled ex-slave? I don't see anything in the article indicating that he was ever freed. In fact, that his tombstone specifically states he was born a slave and pagan, but only mentions one of these changing by the time of his death, it seems rather to me to imply that he died a slave, too. If no one objects within 48 hours I'll change it. Binabik80 04:08, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

He is considered an ex-slave because under British common law, no-one on British home soil could be held to be a slave. In that case Lord Mansfield found slavery had never been authorized by statute within England and Wales, and was also unsupported within England by the common law.
