Chinatown, Oakland inuse?

[edit]

Hi, you've placed an inuse template at 17:29. Just wondering when you will be done so I can also do some edits. Thanks Petersam 05:02, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the inuse template to do some edits Petersam 07:04, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I have no plans to edit that article. I saw your notice at the top of the article, and I replaced it with the inuse template. JarlaxleArtemis 00:22, May 26, 2005 (UTC)

Latest news on image copyrights

[edit]

FYI, there's been a change in the allowed uses of copyrighted images. "Non-commercial only" permission is no longer allowed, per Jimbo Wales himself. See Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2005-05-23/Noncommercial images. I don't know how this will effect your attempt to get permission from the Wizards of the Coast. -Willmcw 06:32, May 25, 2005 (UTC)

I have already read Jimbo's statement regarding that issue. I think that is a very stupid change. What's wrong with Jimbo? If Wikipedia has the copyright owner's permission, then the images should be allowed. JarlaxleArtemis 00:22, May 26, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, it is a difficult policy because images are hard to "paraphrase." Well, I guess we could sketch. Or go take our own photographs, when that's possible (not easy to photograph an orc). So, did the Wizards ever even respond to your letter? I recently asked for a GFDL license from a group for a news-type photo, using one of these Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission, and they gave unlimited permission. You might ask again. Maybe someone in the marketing department would see value. Cheers, -Willmcw 06:43, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)
No word from Wizards yet. They are a huge corporation, so it's not a surprise that they haven't answered yet (if they ever will). JarlaxleArtemis 22:20, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)
Do you mind if I try? -Willmcw 23:36, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)
Not at all. JarlaxleArtemis 23:38, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

Non-commercial only and By Permission Only Images to be deleted

[edit]

Why are "non-commercial only" and "by permission only" images going to be deleted? If one has the copyright owner's permission to use the images, then one would think that using the images is okay. JarlaxleArtemis 23:56, May 24, 2005 (UTC)

Our goal is to create a _free_ (in the sense of GNU) encyclopedia. Non-free images are contrary to that purpose. When we accept non-free images, we make our work proprietary, that is to say, we change our work so that only Wikipedia may use it, no one else can use it. This is contrary to our fundamental principles.
The Four Freedoms of free software apply to Wikipedia. People should have the right to copy our work. They should have the right to distribute our work. They should have the right to modify our work. And they should have the right to distribute modified versions of our work.
There are a great many complexities and borderline cases associated with this. "Fair use" presents a challenging example, and I think that we rely far too heavily on fair use and that virtually all (yes, virtually all!) of the images which are currently tagged as 'fair use' should be deleted. But this is a grey area and so at this time, I only urge people to be cautious about those.
But "by permission only" and "non-commercial only" are not grey areas. They are clearly non-free images which hurt our work. The examples I gave on the mailing list show why -- we are in some cases using non-free images when it would be trivial to get a free image. This means that people who want to use our work get a broken work. This is bad.
--Jimbo Wales 13:41, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
imho its hypocritical to allow fair use images which are of virtually no use to commercial reusers due to variations in copyright law and which can only be used in context whilst not allowing images with permission that is simarlarlly restrictive. I do agree about the non commercial and wiki(m|p)edia only cases though as theese prevent commercial reuse completely. Plugwash 20:27, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. Let's rebel against the system! Screw copyright, lawyers, and all that other beaurocratic crap! We can move the servers to China, where they don't have copyright. JarlaxleArtemis 00:34, May 26, 2005 (UTC)

Hehe, yeah I was impressed by that user's edits too. Sadly I haven't read any of the later Drizzt books so I wouldn't be able to contribute anything like that :P Thanks anyway -Erolos 11:16, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

GM vs. Microsoft

[edit]

Sorry to be a wet sock but that joke was circulating more than 5 years ago. Also, it really isn't relevant to be put on the main page talk page (so I removed it). You could have just provided a link to the joke (which is plastered all over the internet. such as [1]). BrokenSegue 02:05, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Damn, I had no idea the joke was that old. I just received it yesterday. JarlaxleArtemis 23:07, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)

Bill Gates vs General Motors

[edit]

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If General Motors had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

  1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
  2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
  3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
  4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
  5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive -- but would run on only five percent of the roads.
  6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.
  7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.
  8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
  9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
  10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Please share this with your friends who love -- but sometimes hate -- their computers.

From the Bank of Wikipedia. Your account is opened

[edit]

I opened your account. Our bank applied Rule 3, and now you have 166.67 initial coins. You can use these coins as a medium of exchange here in wikipedia. For example, you can ask another wikipedian to make specific contributions, deletions, or cast votes for a subject, or pay him with your money for whatever reason. Its not bank's job to punish you in case your transactions are against wikipedia policy. But have in mind that if you are doing illegal transactions, you may be punished by admins. The bank is going to pay you 2 coins for each person you are going to introduce to the Bank.

Whatever transactions you are doing with other wikipedians, please do them in User_talk:Bank_of_Wikipedia. The trusted employees of the bank are going to confirm the validity of your transactions, and they are going to copy them (after a short delay) to your official account that resides in User:Bank_of_Wikipedia userpage.

I wish to coment your changes on the article about Huitzilopochtli. The festivity of huitzilopochtli was not 24 days of blood. And aztec month has 24 days, and the month was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli. But festivities did not last the whole month. There were only 18 festivities around the year and sacrifices were made only on those festivities. Please check the article aobut aztecs

Also, you are changing the legend of the fifth sun, Nanahuatzin was the solar god who dare to throw himself in the fire, and Tecciztecatl was the lunar god. This legend is centuries older than Huitzilopochtli. please check the entry of Nanauatzin in the wikipedia.

Nanahuatzin 00:16, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I don't know about the legend of the fifth sun, but Huitzilopochtli's festival was one of twenty-five days of a blood orgy with hearts and blood of prisoners dumped on his altar (or so says this link). JarlaxleArtemis 00:24, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
Hello.
The aztecs believed we are in the fifht creation, :
The Maya and the Aztecs both believed they were the people of the fifth sun. One Aztec version, reported by Miguel León-Portilla, tells that this sun was created in Teotihuacan. When all was still dark, the gods gathered there and asked who would take it upon himself to make light, to make days. Two gods offered themselves: Tecuziztécatl and Nanahuatzin. They offered sacrifices, but Tecuziztécatl was proud and made empty, showy offerings, while the other was more devout. When the time came for the gods to throw themselves into the fire, Tecuziztécatl held back and it was Nanahuatzin who became the sun. Tecuziztécatl was then shamed and threw himself on the fire second, becoming the moon.
http://zedilloworld.presidencia.gob.mx/PAGES/culture/note_milenio.html
Huitzilopochtli is not mentioned in this legend, wich was recopilated directly from aztec sources (Florentine codex)... where did you take the version your put.?
This link http://www.scns.com/earthen/other/seanachaidh/godaztec.html, does not report where it took their info, although it seems it was taken from Prescot, which is not very acurate. The info you erased comes from people like [Juan Bautista de Pomar].
I sugest to read the info about sacrifices in the article about [aztec]s.

Okay. You can re-add the information again if you want to. JarlaxleArtemis 23:00, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)

Submission (Islam)

[edit]

Hey, you put Submission (Islam) up for speedy deletion as patent nonsense... well, although I'm not sure that's the best title... it isn't exactly nonesense... there is a view purported by Rashad Khalifa (the 19 code thing which I think is nonesense but... I wouldn't say it doesn't deserve an article) that is all about Qur'an only Islam... this has also spawned movements (whatever their size may be...) that take the same basic interpretations of the Qur'an but don't accept the 19 code thing... I think they do deserve some recognition on wikipedia (under some article name) but... either way if you want it delete I think you should try VfD or help find a better name for the article... gren 15:47, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Speedying

[edit]

Hello. I'm puzzled by this addition of the speedy delete tag. Of course, the article is wretched. Arguably, the subject is not notable (etc. etc.). However, I don't see how it's a candidate for speedying. If you're sure that it is, please mark it again as a speedy, giving the reason. -- Hoary 07:13, 2005 Jun 18 (UTC)

I already replied on the talk page. JarlaxleArtemis 07:15, Jun 18, 2005 (UTC)
Yup, our messages crossed. It's OK then. (Erm, OT but is "Euclid Fraktur" a font I should have encountered?) -- Hoary 07:19, 2005 Jun 18 (UTC)
Euclid Fraktur is the font that I use for my signatures. What about it, if I may ask? JarlaxleArtemis 07:21, Jun 18, 2005 (UTC)
Well, yes, I see that it's what you're using in your signature, but presumably you're doing this less for your own amusement than for the potential amusement of others. While I of course know what Fraktur is, I'd never heard of "Euclid Fraktur", and neither does any of my computers (each renders it as sans-serif). Do you happen to know if it's widely used, as Fraktur fonts go? (Disappointingly, Fraktur doesn't start to say.) I did a bit of googling just now, and came up with this source (via [http://jeff.cs.mcgill.ca/~luc/fraktur.html this info page). P'raps I'll download and install it. -- Hoary 07:37, 2005 Jun 18 (UTC)
The font came with my computer upon purchase. I thought it would be fairly common; my computer came with Windows XP. JarlaxleArtemis 07:42, Jun 18, 2005 (UTC)
Ah, XP. I escaped the clutch of MS before getting that (indeed, it was the XP "product activation" nonsense that decided it for me). Ah well, if the font is both freely downloadable and standard in XP it will be widely used. Thanks for telling me. -- Hoary 08:02, 2005 Jun 18 (UTC)

Good job in finding that Effie M. Morrissey is a copyright violation. But "copyvio" is in fact not a criterion for speedy deletion. The best course of action when you spot it is to replace the page with a {{copyvio|url=source of text}}-tag, then bring the article to WP:CP. This gives the poster a chance to explain him or herself (perhaps the poster is the copyright holder, or maybe the source is public domain). Sjakkalle (Check!) 09:42, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. JarlaxleArtemis 19:19, Jun 18, 2005 (UTC)

Helping

[edit]

Thanks for helping out on the vandalism patrol. I should alert you to a complex situation involving several editors and several articles. user:68.10.35.153/user:Baxter2 camre through and added a large amount of favorable info to Bill White (activist), along with quite a bit of libellous info about White's enemies, including former partners and an ex-girlfriend. There is a reasonable suspicion that the editor is Bill White himself, though he has denied this. More recently, a couple of the subjects of these articles have become active and are removing some of the info that "Baxter2" added. User:24.94.181.211 is one of those people, self-identified as Chuck Munson. So the rest of us are witnesses or unwilling participants in a personal squabble which requires some care. In the matter of the Tad Kepley article there seems to be a lot of malicious gossip, so I didn't object when the usually-overzealous User:24.94.181.211 deleted most of it. If you'd like to be on top of this I'd suggest you glance over the talk:Bill White (activist) page, which has some of the back-story. Thanks again for the maintenance. Cheers, -Willmcw June 29, 2005 06:16 (UTC)

Please stop reverting the post-leftism entry to false information about post-leftism. I know post-leftists and am very familiar with contemporary anarchism. This entry is inaccurate.—User:24.94.181.211 06:20, June 29, 2005 (UTC)

Okay. Please stop blanking discussion pages, though. Jarlaxle June 29, 2005 06:23 (UTC)

I'll stop blanking discussion pages when people hostile to the subject stop posting slander, misinformation, and information intended to stalk and intimidate the subject. BTW, you've reached a new low when you reverted an edit that I made based on my involvement as a member of the collective and called my edit "vandalism." That's priceless. I'm a member of that group so I happen to be in a position to know the *facts* about the history of that group.

Sure, whatever you say buddy. I'm not interested in that boring political subject anyway. Jarlaxle June 30, 2005 03:41 (UTC)

LA-area Wiki meetup

Amber Michaels

[edit]

The image you uploaded for Amber Michaels has been removed on grounds of pornography. If you are familiar with this adult film star, would you mind helping by citing sources and inserting reference links for this person? Hall Monitor 29 June 2005 22:50 (UTC)

I didn't upload that picture. Jarlaxle June 29, 2005 22:51 (UTC)
You are right, my apologies. It was User:7121989. Hall Monitor 29 June 2005 22:54 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't have the book with me. All I remember is that every deity had an entry called “superior” or “answers to”. And there was mentionned Lord Ao's light superior. I guess the Trilogy of the Time of Troubles is the best place to look for. Reply to David Latapie 30 June 2005 00:50 (UTC)

as far as I remember, it was the FR version, but for ADD2, not for DD3 Reply to David Latapie 30 June 2005 12:33 (UTC)

I'm Confused

[edit]

I don't suppose you have any idea who this clown is, or what he's saying, or what's wrong with his head, do you? For an anonymous troll, he's awfully persistent. --Scimitar 4 July 2005 19:06 (UTC)

No, I have no idea who the hell that is. Jarlaxle 02:57, July 11, 2005 (UTC)

List of subatomic particles

[edit]

Jeremy -

I am not interested in doing an edit war with you. However, that page is redundent. I would appreciate talking about it with on talk:list of subatomic particles. If posible, I would like this issue to be resolved amicably.

Also, I ask that if you do revert the article again that you at least preserve my edit of the Category:Physics lists link. I have made it so that the entries in that category beginning with "List of" are sorted based on the rest of their names. It is that edit that places the article under "S" (for subatomic ...) instead of "L" (for List ...). --EMS | Talk 02:53, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Drow eye colour in Drizzt Do'Urden

[edit]

Hey JA, are you sure that the normal drow eye colour is red in the visual spectrum? I thought their eyes only glowed red in the dark (when using infravision). I haven't seen any other indications of typical drow eye colour. Cheers, --Deathphoenix 20:47, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Their eyes are normally red in the visual spectrum. They only glow, however, when using infravision. (When they glow, their eyes are still red of course.) That is how R.A. Salvatore depicts them, anyway. I'm not sure if all authors do. Jarlaxle 20:56, July 13, 2005 (UTC)
Sounds good, thanks. I guess my memory didn't serve me right. --Deathphoenix 21:04, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jarlaxle, I saw you reply to that vandal on his talk page. I'm the person he's been bothering. Do you know how I can get him blocked? Or, if you're an admin yourself, would you mind blocking him? Thanks, Jaxl 22:36, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an admin. You can report him at Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress, and an admin will probably block him for you. Jarlaxle 00:01, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, Jtdirl somehow found out about him and blocked him after I asked you. Thanks for the info, though; I'll need it for future reference. Best, Jaxl 00:06, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Saw that you made an edit cleaning up the all caps and sorting the stub. Do you happen to know anything about this topic? When I first saw it I thought it was a hoax but now suspect it is part of some sort of game. There is a reference too it by another article, Maxiums, created by the same user today. Google doesn't produce anything on both of these so I am still a little worried about them. Tobycat 00:26, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I really don't know anything about Geomontan. Jarlaxle 00:31, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

Glad you think so. :) Howabout1 Talk to me! 21:40, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

I don't know what source you used for this but the Castle of Vajdahunyad that is pictured here was most certainly in Budapest, Hungary when I took that photo... -- Francs2000 | Talk 20:24, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hm… Budapest is the capital of Hungary, which was never part of Romania. That's odd. Well, either my source is wrong, or there are two castles of the same name (which seems unlikely). Jarlaxle 20:34, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
Is it possible that the castle was moved? I seem to remember it being referred to as a Transylvanian castle, but as you say Budapest isn't in Transylvania... -- Francs2000 | Talk 20:37, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It would appear that there are two: [2] -- Francs2000 | Talk 20:40, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it sure does. That link explains it all. Jarlaxle 20:45, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

I appreciate that you are interested, by why exactly did you mass-revert my changes? There are probably individual cases that are arguable, but that article has long been an add-your-personal-favorite playground. If the lists are too exhaustive then they cease to be illustrative examples and begin to get in the way.

There has been some discussion of this on the talk page, but mostly it has just been assumed that we are listing representative examples, not trying to document everything there is. I've been pruning this article periodically for months now - it's just that I've been away and as far as I can tell it hasn't been kept up in my absesnse. There are a lot of drive-by additions that aren't necessary and really are a sort of vanity (i.e. it's my favorite that I made up). -Aranel ("Sarah") 21:40, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In the words of Pikel Bouldershoulder, "Ooo…" (That is a sign of disappointment, just in case you are not familiar with the green-bearded dwarf.) Jarlaxle 21:45, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
Huh? I spent over half an hour editing that article. You took three seconds to revert it. I would at least like to know why. -Aranel ("Sarah") 22:02, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I put back the only thing that you contributed. All your other edits were just taking items out of the article. Jarlaxle 22:06, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
Er, yes. And I thought about it carefully and I think I had good reason for removing them. If you disagree, can we at least talk about it? -Aranel ("Sarah") 22:08, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, revert my edits if you want. I suppose it's not that important of an article, anyway. Jarlaxle 22:11, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for reverting the article back to the maximum info. I got myself a good printout before it could by reverted back to a skeleton article, and I enjoy every bit of it! JohanL 05:07, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I'm glad to see at least some people are pleased by my edits. Jarlaxle 04:39, July 25, 2005 (UTC)

Controversy

[edit]

It is not a matter of controversy. Maybe if the guy has said that he was pope it might be. But he explicitly said he wasn't, and accepted the election of 4 popes from 1958, something he would not have done if he was pope. It is just a case of a few ultra-exteme fringe Catholics making up something that the man in the centre of it said was wrong. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 22:22, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

He's worthy of his own article, though, isn't he? Perhaps under a different title, such as Gregory XVII? Jarlaxle 22:33, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
Never mind. I didn't realize there already was an article about him at Giuseppe Cardinal Siri. Jarlaxle 22:36, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

Narfell

[edit]

Hello,

I don't understand why you removed some informations. Lady of Poison is a novel about Narfell, referenced as well on Wizards' forums. For the rest, I'm trying to create a consistent layout. See Guidelines for description. Reply to David Latapie 15:42, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, I just see Wikipedia is being comment-spam"ed (your page by Gong Bank) :-(
Regarding Narfell, the header had been suggested by a person who put a lot of {{contexts}} templates on the pages. See here for details. I would welcome a template, if it is necessary (and, according to the amount and detail of the information about FR, that may prove useful).

By the way, I also put again online some of the old material abot Lady of Poison and the rest, for the purpose of the guidelines Reply to David Latapie 20:09, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I put the Image:Kimahri2.jpg up for deletion because it is a duplicate Image:Kimahri Ronso art.jpg. This is probally why it originally dispeared. --ZeWrestler Talk 03:44, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

re: Image:Kimahri Ronso art.jpg — Oh hey sorry about that! I didn't realise. That was back when I was on a mad rampage to set a standard for the Final Fantasy X character articles. Don't take it personally, I certainly didn't mean it that way eh! — CuaHL 21:08, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's part of the Template:FFX character used in the character articles. — CuaHL 21:24, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

FFX character?

[edit]

Not to nag, but was that all really necessary? Do you really need to be the author of the pictures? I'm sorry that I uploaded a similar picture to the one you used, but I don't think you realise that changing a template changes all the pages it uses. If you don't know how to use templates, just ask me to fix it and I could add an optional image line or something useful. — CuaHL 22:39, 26 July 2005 (UTC) re: Image:Kimahri Ronso art.jpg — Yeah, if anything the images are quite an improvement. But hey, like I said, it might actually be an idea to change the template some so we don't have to mess around with filenames (I didn't take that into account when I made the template I guess) — CuaHL 22:50, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I can relate to that! — CuaHL 22:54, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
