Hey, this is a great article - I'd never heard of this before (but then, no history buff me). Can I suggest some enhancements? I'd really like to know:

  • why the mob was so keen on the smugglers?
  • the article isn't crystal clear about the order of his death - it sounds like convicted, pardoned, lynched. If that's the case, the article should probably say something like "Porteous was convicted on XXX and sentenced to death, but his conviction was quashed by a royal pardon on YYY. Enraged by this, the mob took matters into its own hand, dragging Porteous from his cell, before ..."
  • the names of the king (the pardoner) and the provost would also be good additions

Thanks for your comments - I'll see what I can do to make the chronology of events clearer. – Agendum 11:50, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

John Porteous is a pretty common name in Edinburgh... is there any proof the two incidents refer to the same man?--Stephencdickson (talk) 15:15, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Golf#Captain_John_Porteous Thincat (talk) 17:04, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This would appear to suggest so. wjematherbigissue 17:15, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is a nice reference and, being 1999, cannot have been copied from WP! Thincat (talk) 18:12, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
