Sparse

[edit]

This is VERY sparse, and should really only link to lists by country/city. I just created it to house content moved from Train station. Zoney 21:01, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Purpose of this page

[edit]

Aside from moving stuff off of Train station, what is the purpose of this page ? Should we go to [www.amtrak.com] and get a list of all the passenger rail stations in the United States? This list could get very silly - I might mention Cary, North Carolina which has a train station that serves as a prominent landmark for navigation and a whistle stop, I could mention Raleigh, North Carolina which even has a ticket window, and I could mention Huntsville, Alabama which has a train-station-turned-museum from before the United States Civil War complete with Civil War soldier graffiti protected behind plexiglass on the top floor. Yes, the list is very sparse, and I can't figure out the value of the list except to reference stations worthy of articles. -- ke4roh 00:49, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

It's a valid question - why have lists, but the current policy seems to be to tolerate them - I believe "categories" were introduced to do away with the need for lists - but so far lists haven't been stopped. As for this list specifically - it's no sillier than manys another list on Wikipedia. I would suggest that some sub-articles will be required for the US. (For example, there was already a list of London railway stations).
Finally - it is indeed here to stop people populating train station with a big list. Like list of European cities with alternative names, it keeps certain editors amused. zoney  talk 01:32, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I have to agree, this list is terrible. It should at least be noted that it is far from comprehensive. You mentioned that Cary has a train station, but if you really got started on European train stations, it would probably be the biggest page on Wikipedia. In Germany, almost every town worth mentioning has a train station (see Heimbach, for instance, which is even an end station). I suppose it does have that purpose of getting people to stop making lists on the main train station page. Maybe it should be changed to list only major stations, though... Request for Renaming of Article

[edit]

This article should be named List of railway terminals, since it seems that is what it's all about!

Moebiusuibeom-en (talk) 05:43, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Or List of Passengers Rail Terminals. This article may clear things up; Rail Terminals

Previously "no consensus": serious rethink may be required (WP:NOTDIR)

[edit]

The article for railway stations in Japan that starts with the letter M sits at 71 KiB, 1,676 lines long. While the concept behind this article may have sounded like a good idea at first, it is actually impossible to indiscriminately list all the railway stations of the world in a single article.

While there is no hope for this particular article, I don't believe it should be salted like List of anime, but rather be redirected to something that would be useful as a starting point. Perhaps expand on Lists of railway stations, a meta-list, in hopes that it would one day be as awesome as the Lists of countries article. Just my 2¢. —Tokek (talk) 04:24, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Head list

[edit]

It's clear from the talk page and AfDs that this list is very poorly constructed and has a poor scope. In the most recent AfD it was suggested that this article become a "head list" index to other lists. As I think this is a good idea, I propose renaming and rescoping this list to be a List of lists of railway stations (with a redirect maintained from the current title).

If this is accepted, the headings here would be organised hierarchically by continent, country, and sub-national regions as necessary to cover all the extant lists. For example, there are many more lists of railway stations in the United Kingdom than there are for Singapore, and thus the latter probably will not require any sub-national headings. Where there exists list of railway stations articles at multiple levels in the hierarchy all should be listed at their appropriate level. Where multiple lists exist at the same level they should be listed alphabetically.

Any thoughts? Thryduulf (talk) 15:09, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds like a big improvement to me. Is it worth dusting off this idea?
Almost all the national lists of railway stations are in a shocking state, and some have rightly been redirected to parent articles like "Rail transport in...", whilst several of the countries with a large network simply don't have a list. (We have had many "list of railway stations..." articles for countries which actually have no railways). However, anything is an improvement over the current situation. bobrayner (talk) 13:41, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Even a redirect to The diary of Tristram Shandy would be an improvement. For instance, the total number of stations listed for France, which does pretty well on this list compared to other countries, is still rather less than the number of new railway stations built in France since this article was started... bobrayner (talk) 13:56, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that given the length of time this proposal has been active that there has been plenty of opportunity for any objections. Accordingly I say we start the conversion without further delay. I think we should always link to "List of railway stations in X" titles, making sure there is a redirect from that title to the location of the list if it isn't there. That way there is less maintenance required as lists get expanded, and it also makes it easier for people to find and link to the lists. Should we rename the page and than restructure or restructure and then move it? Thryduulf (talk) 14:18, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Linking to the "List of railway stations in..." redirects is sensible and low-maintenance. It would be sensible to link to sub-lists too, where they exist, like lists of stations on one particular urban network &c. bobrayner (talk) 15:29, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If it's any help, UK rail stations should already be in one or another of UK railway stations, List of heritage railway stations in the United Kingdom, List of closed railway stations in Britain or their sub-lists. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:52, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The idea of a Head List is a good one. No need to retitle though. See List of windmills for an example of a head list in action. Mjroots (talk) 16:06, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
