Considering that the students' names are already in alphabetical order, can it truly be said that the Sorting Hat is doing any sorting at all?

Maybe it's more like calculating a hash value . . . User:Ed Poor

Sorting obviously means sorting people into houses. Sorting people into alphabetical order wouldn't really affect future events -Adrian Hobbs.

Somebody please reword the following:

" to do: why didn't it assign Harry to Slytherin? [because Harry was saying to himself 'not Slytherin! Not Slytherin!' and the Hat respected his wishes... plus the Hat could see his deeper motives and knew that he lacked the Slytherin 'sneakiness' gene.]

Also because, as Dumbledore says at the end, and probably the theme of the whole 1st book, it is one's choices which determine one's fate. Harry was put into G. because that is what he chose. "

I moved this from the page

" as i recall, the archchancellor's hat was big and elaborate with lots of compartments, dozens of fishing flies, and a screw-off cap containing a bottle of liquor - but it wasn't magically animated or articulate, so it wasn't THAT similar"

Perhaps we should remove said hat (of which I know nothing) until someone can actually NAME a similarity? There is none in that description of it. -- Someone else 01:23 26 Jun 2003 (UTC)
Yeah. Ilyanep 01:19 28 Jun 2003 (UTC)
OK, now it's here, ready to be moved back if anyone actually names a similarity! "

There are similarilities to the Archchancellor's Hat in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series." -- Someone else 01:02 2 Jul 2003 (UTC)
