On Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft I have started a proposal for how lists of aircraft could be rationalised on wikipedia. If you're interested, let's discuss it there -- Cabalamat 03:07, 1 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I am increasingly of the belief that this list is even less scalable than List of aircraft as the numbers of aircraft articles increase, and it is not being kept up to date. Should we abandon this article? —Morven 06:20, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)
As its creator, I'm reluctant to agree with you, but you certainly have a point. The idea was that whenever an aircraft was added to the monolithic list, this table was updated also. People don't seem to be bothering, yet finding aircraft when you aren't sure of its exact name on WP is still problematic. I guess part of the problem is the very unweildy format for editing tables - until that's fixed there isn't much incentive to figure out where an entry goes and add it. It's a pity somebody can't come up with a WYSIWYG table editor for WP - a Java applet perhaps. However, this may not be the true cause of the problem, so I think we should discuss it some more before eliminating the page altogether. Graham 01:23, 29 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Frankly, I don't see much use for it either. I suspect that's part of the reason it isn't being kept up; the other part is that it is unclear where to enter aircraft. By first flight? By IOC? (... and what if it didn't enter service?) By the first decade it was used or in every one? (Cf. aircraft like the DC-3 and An-2.) By the decade(s) in which it was in production? Boeing 2707 was never produced

[edit]

Why is this one on the list? What is the criteria for an aircraft to be listed?

core list

[edit]

It seems to me this is a fairly core list, but it is not all that complete, I'd say not even close. Firstly, I'm kind of working on a list of my own so maybe I can add it here when it is done. Secondly, it would be nice to have a standard entry. For example for my particular purposes I'm compiling a list by production numbers. The meta-data is Total Production1 - upper suggested number Total Production2 - medium suggested number Total production3 - lowest suggested number Manufacturer model Military designation Major production variant Variant produced Nicknames/code-names Type major external differentiation feature

Obviously my interest is in production, but the other data is usually available fairly often from the research so does not take much to add tot he spreadsheet which can later be dumped into a database. I'm not suggesting all this needs to be in the aircraft date and usage list. I would need to add DATE as a meta-data field though. In fact it will have to be two fields Accepted for production Decommissioned from service

I also think that periods of aircraft in the list are somewhat arbitrary. It seems to me that the three 20th century wars were the great aircraft drivers, so maybe the columns need be only: Pioneers WW1 generation WW2 1st Jet generation 2nd Jet generation 3rd Jet generation pre-1914 1914-1934 1935-1945 1945-1965 1966-1986 1987-2007

please contact me at mrg3105@gmail.com if you think my suggestions have merit and will make a worthwhile contribution. --Mrg3105 00:17, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

period dating and type consistency

[edit]

The period dating is inconsistent between the type lists. The types are also inconsistent largely because they are too limited. Basic division of aircraft needs to be added from the international standards.--Mrg3105 02:39, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Missing:

[edit]

Tupolev is a manufacturer that should also be in the 1970-present category of civil aircraft manufacturers, as some Tupolev jetliners (eg. Tu 204) are still in production. I don't see it in this part of the list at the moment... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Firth m (talkcontribs) 07:25, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Combine with categories ?

[edit]

If this article was changed to line up with decades (e.g. change 1945 to 1949) then it'd be much easier to check (or even generate ths page from) the categories of aircraft type articles. DexDor (talk) 20:21, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Helicopters list

[edit]

Needs significant revision. Ka-52 clearly was not used in 1946-1969, for starters. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.139.222.6 (talk) 15:08, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GA aviation section is not acceptable

[edit]

The GA section of this article only has GA's currently in production, this isn't all general aviation aircraft. Also this article just needs to be redone. A-37Dragonfly (talk) 22:48, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
