Completion Date

[edit]

Does anyone know the actual date of the completion of construction. I've found conflicting information regarding when it was finished? The conflicts are as much as 2 centuries apart. --Colin Angus Mackay 00:12, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Okay - I've found the 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica states 1567 so I'm going with that as it is a reputable source. --Colin Angus Mackay 00:19, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The date of completion is actually a complex subject due to the many stages of constructon. The 13th Century cathedral, a complete building itself, was consecrated around 1260 and finished sometime in the same century. The cloister was built in the 14th century, the spires in the 15th and the current dome in the 16th. Chapels were added from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The Encyclopaedia Britannica date is likely to refer to the completion of the current dome, while the initial project was already finished by the end of the 13th century, major modifications went n until the 18th century and minor works continue to date. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.54.32.163 (talk) 21:20, 6 August 2008 (UTC) 195.77.246.81 (talk) 09:50, 29 March 2019 (UTC) There is a mistake in this page. The statement:"The Gothic-Plateresque dome, raised by Juan de Colonia in the 15th century" is NOT correct. The dome raised by Juan de Colonia fell down in the next century, and it was replace for other built by Juan de Vallejo. In fact, in the same page, there is other statement which is correct: "In the 16th century, besides the modifications to several chapels, highlights the construction of a new dome by Juan de Vallejo, who replaced the Juan de Colonia (sunk after a hurricane)" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.77.246.81 (talk) 09:44, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Importance

[edit]

This is a building of "top" architectural importance, when compared with the ratings of others. Amandajm (talk) 14:12, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
