Intro section

[edit]

The statement about a "previous Lawrence County" is poorly written and extremely cryptic. That sentence mentions counties clear on the other side of the state that were supposedly derived from this "previous Lawrence County." What is this sentence saying? Can this be rewritten? I have no idea what "and many others, including this one" is supposed to mean, especially when the counties named before "many others" are counties in Southeast Missouri, while the Lawrence County of the present discussion is in Southwest Missouri. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mtnbuilder (talkcontribs) 14:31, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the problem is the previous Lawrence County actually became Lawrence County, Arkansas when Arkansas Territory was created in 1819 from what was the southern part of Missouri Territory. According to this Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article (paywall), what is now Arkansas' Lawrence County "extended from Fayetteville east to the Missouri boot heel and from the Arkansas River north into the Missouri Territory" when created in 1815; it was subsequently subdivided several times to its present boundaries. The two new counties Missouri created in 1818 (both also much larger then) were almost certainly in preparation for Missouri statehood, so that the remaining Lawrence County (then seated at what is now Davidsonville Historic State Park in Arkansas) could become part of Arkansas Territory. (Those counties today are generally closer to Lawrence County, Arkansas than the present Lawrence County, Missouri.) The question is, how do you put that in a proper reference? --RBBrittain (talk) 04:20, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just figured it out and corrected the intro. --RBBrittain (talk) 04:51, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
