I found this Daily Telegraph article from 2003 very interesting, but I am a bit puzzled by the date of retrieval which is shown:

^ http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2003/04/16/btjean.xml www.telegraph.co.uk retrieved 11 April 2008

because todays's date is 9th April 2008 and 11th April 2008 is thus two days into the future! can anyone explain this?

I have several black-and-white photographs of Jean in her old age, which I took when she visited my family home, and will make these available once I have located them, and scanned them digitally

The ref mistake was another editor's simple typo from the 5th. I've fixed it. Next time, just look in the edit history. :) María (habla conmigo) 12:05, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looking forward to seeing your photographs of Rhys, G88keeper. Feel free to remove the image of the Wide Sargasso Sea cover I recently added if you feel it doesn't add anything to the article. --SydSid (talk) 00:44, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the book cover image should probably be replaced with a free image; the fair use rationale does not list this article, but the novel's article, for its purpose. María (habla conmigo) 00:56, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

recent anonymous edit

[edit]

A recent anonymous edit has removed much of the section devoted to her literary style, and while this might be justifiable because it is a subjective appraisal of her work, I feel bound to say that I fell it diminishes the article; but I do not feel qualified to re-instate the missing material, mainly because I did not write it in the first place g88keeper (talk) 21:11, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The section in question had been tagged as original research for nearly a year, and truthfully should have been removed much earlier. Really, the entire article is poor, and needs much in research and reliable citations. Were the anonymous IP to remove properly cited and therefore verifiable information, than you should of course feel no qualms with reverting their edit, because it may be considered vandalism. IMHO, this particular edit seemed justifiable. María (habla conmigo) 01:04, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

another recent anonymous edit

[edit]

I notice information regarding Rhys's children has been deleted. Is there a reason? At least one of her stories relates to the death of a baby, so is it not relevant to say she experienced such a loss herself? RLamb (talk) 08:47, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Posed nude

[edit]

I was intrigued by the suggestion in the article that she posed nude for an artist, possibly William Orpen, in 1913. Can anyone give me an origin/source/substantiation for this story? I would like to cross-refer it to the accounts of Orpen's life at that time. Thanks! 86.172.100.47 (talk) 12:21, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The edit originally appeared in 2008 with the reference '^ http://muse.jhu.edu/login?uri=/journals/modernism-modernity/v011/11.2rosenberg.html Caribbean Models for Modernism in the Work of Claude McKay and Jean Rhys Modernism/modernity - Volume 11, Number 2, April 2004, pp. 219-238 Link retrieved 11 April 2008' Her OED entry says only that '...she moved on the margins of the artistic world, and earned some money as an artist's model.' RLamb (talk) 17:41, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since discovered that the episode appears in her unpublished early novel Triple Sec . Her biographer Carole Angier has told me by email that she believes one of the artists was Orpen. 86.139.238.75 (talk) 22:09, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Chronology 1930 → 1936

[edit]

“Marriage and family… divorced in 1933… The next year [1934, attested by Lennox Honychurch, external link] Rhys married Leslie Tilden-Smith, an English editor. In 1930 they went briefly to Dominica…” Google gives me “Fifty Caribbean Writers: A Bio-bibliographical Critical … books.google.be › books Daryl Cumber Dance - 1986 - ‎Political Science In the short years between her second marriage and the coming of war, Rhys visited Dominica with Leslie Tilden Smith (1936). She had not seen her home for …” On this basis I correct to 1936. --Dominique Meeùs (talk) 08:28, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What does this mean?

[edit]

Near the end of the Early life section, this statement is obscure– "she worked for a time in London as a person."

Anyone know what this is about? Thanks. Manytexts (talk) 07:55, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Far too few in-line citations

[edit]

There are far too many statements, particularly biographical, lacking any in-line citations whatsoever. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.24.237.253 (talk) 16:48, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
