Does it actually make sense to break down physical geography by artificial political borders? See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Ecoregions - the features you describe are different ecoregions, and have names given to them by ecologists.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.177.93.104 (talk) 07:11, 8 February 2003 (UTC)[reply]

I think the comment about geography by state is valid, I'm also working on one for the U.S. Still, I am following the guidelines set up in the Wikipedia:WikiProject_U.S._States and the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Countries - sfmontyo

As far as terminology, the geography descriptions are coming from the 1911 encyclopedia britannica with some minor editing on my part. Please feel free to edit them as you wish.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Sfmontyo (talkcontribs) 07:49, 8 February 2003 (UTC)[reply]

The old encyclopedia info doesn't jive with the divisions that the state gives http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/areas/natareas/natural.htm also there was study done on Dialect and Heritage areas in Missouri done in the 1920's-1930's. It broke the State down into about 10 areas depending on the dialect (There are about 5 different dialects of English spoken in the state) or cultural heritage. A map of those the divisons can be found here Vernacular Architecture in Rural and Small Town Missouri (The Map is what you want to look at although the Vernacular Architecture article is very intersting. A portion of the WPA guide is here http://members.aol.com/hsauertieg/rt66/wpa_mo.htm You can order the full guide from Amazon here Amazon Linkand I think the senate website also has that guide for sale or at least mentions it here http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/WPAStateGuides.pdf. I think the WPA Guide is Public Domain but I'm not sure. I know for sure that the State Conservation article is not Public Domain and would hve to be rewritten if it is to be included.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.244.3.94 (talk) 07:11, 6 June 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Mississippi below Ste. Gen. =

[edit]

The article says, "The Mississippi is skirted with lagoons, lakes and morasses from Ste. Genevieve to the Arkansas border, and in places is confined by levees.". Is that accurate? It sounds like it might be taken from the 1911 Britannica, and much has changed in this area since then. --Kbh3rdtalk 18:00, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Physiographic regions

[edit]

The text and the map is not consistent in terminology and content. The text says there are has three distinct physiographic divisions in Missouri; the map shows five physiographic provinces.

  • Dissected till plain = Osage Plain and Dissected Till Plains?
  • Ozark highlands = Ozark Plateau?
  • Western plain = ?
  • Coastal plain = ?
  • Till plain = Mississippi Alluvial Plain?
