Fish images

[edit]

I have removed the images you've uploaded from all articles because they are most certainly not public domain, and your tagging them as such—unless of course you are authorized to release them into the public domain—was a gross misrepresentation. These images are from the NORFANZ Photo Library (also here) and are therefore under crown copyright. We cannot use these images because they are incompatible with the GFDL, as you were warned about at the upload screen.

So, unless you have permission from NORFANZ to use them on Wikipedia under our licensing agreement (an email confirmation would be required in this case), I must ask you to remove the {{PD}} tag from the description pages of all images you've uploaded, and, if you could, list them at Wikipedia:Copyright problems. (I'll do this myself if you don't, but it'd be courteous of you to.) Wikipedia has to be careful about avoiding copyright violations; uploading images which you do not own the copyright to (and are incompatible with the GFDL) only serves to harm the project. Thanks for your consideration. -- Hadal 03:14, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Addendum: I've just taken the time to list all of the images for you. Please take care to confirm the copyright status of any further images you plan to upload. Thanks. -- Hadal 04:55, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

That's okay; most of us made mistakes when we were new. ;) I too have a great interest in deep-sea fish (hence the user name), so I can understand your desire to illustrate the subject. Unfortunately, most of the images available online are unusable on Wikipedia, due to their unfree status. (That's the one area where I commend the US federal government; they usually release their material into the public domain. It's a pity Australia and other Commonwealth countries don't do the same.) Happy editing, -- Hadal 05:11, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)
