Fanny Adams

[edit]

Fanny Adams redirects here, but it is not at all clear why until you see the table of contents. In wondering how to make it a little more obvious, the only thing that came to mind was giving the section its own article, with a link here, and a link from here there (possibly in See also if it doesn't fit anywhere else). The only thing though is that what we have isn't really enough for an article on its own - is there any more than can be said? If not is there a way of making it more visible why you're redirected here? Thryduulf 22:40, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Who is Arthur Roberts? Does he deserve mention on this page? All I can find about him is several websites that reckon he is a famous former member of Alton College - a conclusion they may have drawn from reading this Alton WP page. Euchiasmus 21:06, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed Arthur Roberts. 86.137.111.226 05:29, 29 March 2006 (UTC)hbcv[reply]
I have removed him again (maybe a revert was responsible for his reappearance). Euchiasmus 14:58, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wisden

[edit]

I'm not sure where to put this, but cricket fans will know Alton as the location of John Wisden & Co., Ltd. - the publishers of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. Loganberry (Talk) 23:37, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think they're in Alton parish, they're in Golden Pot a hamlet a few miles north [1] -- John (Daytona2 · talk) 22:44, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks !

[edit]

Great article - thanks to all those who have contributed !

I have a vague recollection that Linda Barker studied at the college, but perhaps she was at one of the other sites.

As for the comment in the WikiProject box above, that prose is better than lists, that's a personal opinion and one with which I disagree. John 23:19, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More recent developments

[edit]

Why are the openings of Sainsbury's, Dominoes & Subway notable? I don't believe they should be included in this list. Deckchair (talk) 12:40, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They arn't; I've removed them. -- John (Daytona2 · Talk · Contribs) 22:14, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Converting acres to sq metres

[edit]

Is this normal WP practice? It seems to me to give the figures a specious accuracy (even though they are neatly rounded). Surely hectares are more appropriate? Or is it because...

When the metric system was rationalised in 1960 with the introduction of the International System of Units (SI), international recognition of the are was withdrawn, though the hectare continued to be recognised as a "unit of measure that may be used with SI". Higher (market?) towns in the south-east:

[edit]

Haslemere, Surrey is a higher town at 501.97 feet (153.00 m) the most central point there I take as being the junction of West St and High St. There may be more high towns, you can check by right clicking points on http://gridreferencefinder.com Adam37 (talk) 07:46, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Development

[edit]

@Jaguar: I think we should brainstorm some ideas for development/potential sources.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:52, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: There are no shortage of Alton history books (I found a few yesterday when I was strolling through the town), and we could also ransack Google books, which is the same thing we did for Bentworth. I'll try and find some online sources, but in the mean time I'll make a start on re-structuring some sections so it looks less cluttered and more GA worthy. There are more sources for this town so it should less difficult to build. JAGUAR  14:24, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The brewery has closed :-( ..... having got Faversham through GA, another (now ex) brewery market town is well worth doing. You definitely want to give prominence to beer and brewing, it was big business. I seem to recall there is a good second hand bookshop on the east end of the High Street that might do a good trade in second hand history books for you. There's the Jane Austen connection in nearby Chawton too. I'm suspicious about the "Sweet Fanny Adams" story (which is unsourced), I'd always thought "Fanny Adams" was a retroynm for FA, as in .... well guess (and I don't mean Featured Article!) Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:39, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The town is famous for Sweet Fanny Adams, and finding sources for that would be no problem, although it's something that would have been more well known in the 1800s than in 2015. I was in that bookshop the other day! So sad about Alton's last brewery closing down, it used to have four breweries in 1997. I'm a bit busy with Bentworth's FAC at the moment but I should start work on this within the next couple of days. JAGUAR  20:01, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tony Holkham with his BNA access and interest in the general area may be able to help. Triple fff Brewery maintains a cultural link with 'Alton Pride' even if they are in Four Marks. SovalValtos (talk) 20:25, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My BNA access has expired but will be renewed shortly, I understand, so will look at this again then. Have been having a wiki-break to rescue the garden and the Saab. Tony Holkham (Talk) 20:41, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked "Alton, Hampshire" with my BNA login and the first hit was a murder in 1879. Well I never. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:00, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A prominent feature of the town is the new magistrates court. SovalValtos (talk) 21:14, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
