Notes

[edit]

It seems like this article has some unique material, but it should probably be merged with France, or maybe into the politics, foreign relations, and economy subpages for France. 81.153.69.135, thanks for contributing. -Apol0gies

Merges

[edit]

This wasn't a bad idea in itself making two articles "France in Modern Times", but it has the inconvenient of overlapping with each regime that have different dates. In particular, it cuts the French Third Republic (1871-1940) in two, and contents and energies are going to be spilled away. I think it is better if we moved all the relevant content from here to French Third Republic, French Fourth Republic and French Fifth Republic, and make a disambiguation page or something. While there is no real legitimate reason to cut Category:Contemporary French history with 1920, institutional dates (change of regimes) give useful landmarks on which everybody can agree (although of course at a historical analysis level there is no more reason to break things up with only the change of regimes, but we must find a solution to unite the articles.) About Spanish Civil War

[edit]

"Blum decided that he couldn't afford to support the Spanish Republicans, which led to huge deceptions among the French left-wing"

This part is not exact : the Communist Party was for the intervention of the french army in the war, and a part of the members of the SFIO too, including Blum, but the Radicals were against supporting the Republicans and threatened to leave the governement in case of intervention in the war. Blum had no choice, and he had to obey to the Radicals. Although He managed to secretly give weapons to Republicans, he has felt remorses about the situation until he died.

Sorry my english isn't perfect, but I'm sure about the informations ;)

Order of sub articles

[edit]

I started a discussion on the talk page of the main article History of France, suggesting that the order of sections in sub articles should be changed, any comment there welcome. See Talk:History of France. Equendil Talk 20:09, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photo

[edit]

Please discuss controversial moves. To remove a photo claiming that because the caption says it was taken in 2001, this is not relevant to an article on the 20th century, is not a solid argument. Historians have debated during decades, and still do, to know when the 20th century started, and it most certainly did not start on January 1, 1900 (or 1901). But more probably with the First World War. Same goes with the 21st century. If we will leave it to future historians to find a consensual date for its beginning, we can be sure that January 1, 2000 is NOT the correct date. History is not astrology: we are not dealing with movement of the stars but with historical events in a HUMAN society. Tazmaniacs 15:14, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you claiming that it is still the 20th century? At most, that is a minority opinion; and certainly not one that should be given weight on Wikipedia. Anyway, this is an encyclopedia, not an historial treatise; and we should not weight for future historians. -Acjelen 20:20, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

this article needs a lede in prose

[edit]

Right now the article starts with a series of bullet points. It would be nice to have a lede in prose.OnBeyondZebrax (talk) 22:49, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In September, 1939 Hitler invaded Poland, and France and Great Britain declared war.
